California EV Charger Rebates & Incentives in 2026

Updated guide to federal, state, and local programs that reduce your installation cost

Installing a home EV charger in California is more affordable than you might think. Between the federal tax credit, PG&E rebates, and reduced electricity rates, Bay Area homeowners can save $1,000 or more on their installation. Here is a breakdown of currently active incentive programs in 2026.

Federal 30C Tax Credit: Up to $1,000 Back

The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (Section 30C of the Internal Revenue Code) covers 30% of the total cost of purchasing and installing an EV charger, up to a maximum of $1,000 for residential installations and $100,000 for commercial properties.

The credit applies to both the equipment cost and labor. For example, if your total EV charger installation costs $2,500 (including the charger unit and professional installation), you would receive $750 back on your federal tax return. If your total exceeds $3,334, you hit the $1,000 residential cap.

Important details: This is a tax credit, not a deduction — it directly reduces your tax liability dollar for dollar. You claim it using IRS Form 8911 when filing your annual return. The property must be located in an eligible census tract — most Bay Area locations qualify. Check with your tax advisor to confirm eligibility.

PG&E Residential EV Charging Rebate

PG&E offers a residential EV charging rebate for qualifying households. Standard rebates provide several hundred dollars toward Level 2 charger purchase and installation. Income-eligible households (earning below 80% of Area Median Income) can receive up to $5,000 toward their EV charging setup, making it one of the most generous utility programs in the state.

Eligibility and rebate amounts depend on household income, location, and the specific charger model. We help customers check qualification during the consultation.

PG&E EV Rate Plan (EV-2A)

While not a direct installation rebate, PG&E's EV-2A rate plan provides significantly reduced electricity rates during off-peak hours — typically between 12:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Switching to this rate plan can save you $50 to $100 per month on charging costs. Over a year, that adds up to $600–$1,200 in savings, often exceeding the value of one-time rebates.

Most smart Level 2 chargers support scheduled charging, making it easy to automatically charge during off-peak hours without any manual effort.

PG&E EV Fleet Program (Multi-Family & Commercial)

For multi-family properties and commercial sites, PG&E's EV Fleet program provides infrastructure support including panel upgrades and conduit installation at no cost to the property owner, with the utility retaining ownership of the infrastructure. This can save property owners thousands on the electrical work needed to support multiple chargers.

How to Maximize Your Savings

Combining available programs can meaningfully reduce your out-of-pocket cost. Here is a realistic example for a Bay Area homeowner:

  • EV charger installation from Fox EV Install: $1,200 (standard installation with dedicated circuit)
  • Charger unit (e.g., ChargePoint Home Flex): $600
  • Total project cost: $1,800
  • Federal 30C credit (30%): -$540
  • PG&E rebate (if eligible): -$250 to -$5,000
  • Annual EV-2A rate savings: -$600 to -$1,200/year

Even with just the federal credit, your effective installation cost drops to around $1,260. If you qualify for PG&E income-eligible rebates, your net cost can be substantially lower. If you also need a panel upgrade (from $3,500) or a dedicated circuit (from $550), commercial tax credit amounts are higher and can further offset costs.

Tips for Claiming Your Incentives

  • Check PG&E rebate eligibility before installation — some programs require pre-approval
  • Keep all receipts, invoices, and permit documentation
  • Take before and after photos of your electrical panel and installation
  • File Form 8911 with your tax return for the federal 30C credit
  • Work with a licensed C-10 contractor (required for most programs) — Fox EV Install meets all licensing requirements
  • Switch to PG&E's EV-2A rate plan as soon as your charger is installed to start saving immediately
